My Organic Affinity - ProBar

Posted on 12. Jun, 2009 by The Active Organic in Active, Food, Products

About two months ago while in REI, this little dame caught my eye. I had seen them around but hadn’t paid much attention. I previously used Clif Bar’s for my fueling or daily snack needs but was looking for something new, so I decided to give ‘er a try. Let me tell ya, I seriously fell in love, I mean borderline stocker-ish. ProBar has provided us healthy, whole food, organic and all around insanely good bars.

I’ll give ya some details than tell ya why I am in love.

How it came to fruition
It was all started at Snowbird, Utah by a very noble and wise man! Art Eggersten. Here is a snippet from ProBar’s website:

PROBAR is the perfect example of necessity giving birth to invention. In the late 1990s, Art Eggertsen, a natural food chef and snowboard fanatic, was living, working and playing at Utah’s famous Snowbird Ski Resort. As a natural chef advocating health and good nutrition, Art quickly built a strong reputation and became known as the local “Food Coach”.

Little did he know his passion for whole foods, and supporting others through their nutritional journey, would soon lead to an explosive opportunity. One day while hitting the slopes, Art found himself absolutely starving. He searched his pack only to find bland-tasting, rock-hard energy bars, which he’d sooner chuck to a squirrel than force down his throat. He considered and quickly rejected the next alternative, greasy slope-side-fare of cheeseburgers, fries, and soda. Lucky for us, his empty stomach would not let him continue so famished.

Determined not to let another day of fresh powder go to waste due to hunger, Art took things into his own hands. He needed a better bar - one that not only tastes great, but packs a substantial nutritional punch. He went to his kitchen and started experimenting. He shared each new bar he created, and there were many, with his food-coaching clients. Soon they were begging for more.

The Goods
Every bar is rich in organic ingredients, all natural, trans-fat free, 100% Vegan and has 15 whole food ingredients. With various nuts, berries, fruit, greens and some chocolate mixed in for good measure. All this wrapped up to make an exciting and tasty alternative to other bars. Here are the nutritional facts for those who are interested.

Why I am a Fan
There are many reasons why I am a big fan of these bars. In no certain order:

1) They’re organic, unprocessed and sustainable
2) They’re whole food. The bar isn’t some mashed up concoction of ingredients
3) All the bars taste great. Although I prefer other flavors to the Apple Cinnamon and Sesame Goji
4) They are pretty darn close to a full meal for me. Add some fruit and it is a great lunch
5) A nice amount of fiber, about 25% of DV
6) I am not an expert but you are getting more healthy fat from the nuts and such
7) My favorite little tidbit is the Omega-3’s that most of the bars provide. Presumably from the flax seeds

In Conclusion
I am a huge fan of these bad boy’s. They’re organic, taste great and pack a healthy punch. I have used them while exercising or just as a daily meal. Use em however you see fit.

On a side note, I will solely be using ProBar’s as my fuel and two of my other affinities in the Wasatch Back Relay Race next weekend. I will be posting an update about how the bars treated me and other musings about the race. Keep an eye out.

I ate 12 ProBars on a 48 hour trek across the Highline trail in the Uintahs a couple years back. I will also primarily eat ProBars on my 12 day, 485 mile Colorado Trail adventure in September.

I guess what I’m saying is that they taste good, filling, and provide enough calories to keep the energy up while on the go.
